the brief was to design an art gallery on plein street in the cape town cbd, with a focus on the spaces and lighting required for such a program. as well as an art gallery, the building also had to contain a book shop, café, administrative offices and underground staff parking and storage.
my proposal saw the art gallery facing south, allowing soft light into the exhibition spaces and views table mountain from the highest storey. a courtyard separated the gallery spaces from the café and book shop, acting as a communal space into which both programs could spill and integrate.
