Maudelle Bass-Weston
I chose to research and create an Instagram carousel of Maudelle Bass-Weston. Maudelle was a model, dancer, artists' muse, and a trailblazer in her field. She went on to lead a brilliant career in dance and theatre, and then to teach and lecture at universities. I chose to highlight Maudelle in participation with a joint social project that highlights women in history who were often under-represented and overlooked in their time.
I began with some background research on Maudelle and her life, so that I could incorporate some of her likes and dislikes into the images. I began with small sketches and ideas, to create a starting point for how I wanted to build out my images in photoshop and illustrator.
My next step was to get the general placement and feel of where things would flow well, as well as beginning to combine colors. With my previous research, I wanted to add greenery to each image. This had a two-fold purpose; on the personal side, Maudelle often posed for pictures and paintings as a muse in nature and amongst flowers and trees. The second purpose was more technical- to have leading lines between each picture as the user swipes right or left- this creates an added level of connection to each other.
Most images of Maudelle are in black and white, and some of them have some degree of degradation or grit. I wanted to add that feeling back in by keeping the subjects of each image in Black and White, and adding textures to all elements to give a modern but weathered feel.
Finally, I began to place images into a mock-up for an Instagram carousel, so the images could be seen as they may be one the space before actually uploading them. After adding them into the mock-up, I realized there was too much texture, and decided to omit the background textures, and leave them just on the subjects and the greenery for the final images.
