Pictograms + Wayfinding

The pictograms are based from the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA. The goal is to make wayfinding easier for visitors but it also should have impactful icons that they would immediately recognize in an aquarium.

The first round of sketches focuses on the distinctive characteristics of the aquarium dwellers. But the most I got from feedbacks is the concern that people may not recognize some of the icons such as the deep sea fish's antennae and the starfish.
With that in mind, I had my second round of sketches as well as researching more about the most popular exhibits at Monterey Bay Aquarium, such as the Jellies Experience and the Giant Pacific Octopus.

The sketch for the Kelp Forest exhibit (last image, bottom right) was drawn, but later used as part of a background of the Directory sign.
Through some modifications, but taking the same general idea from the first sketches, I have used the full head and top body of the animal so that visitors can easily recognize and they'll be able to know where they are going to see.
For the exhibit signs, the aquarium's logo was used in the background along with the full images of the exhibit animals.
Two different types of signage are used in the environment of the aquarium. The Directory features the icons of the aquarium animals, placed with arrows pointing in the direction of the respective exhibits. The exhibit sign would be placed in the entrance of the space or by the viewing window.
