In this Project, I was tasked with creating silhouettes in different poses. I really enjoyed this project and took it as good practice for basic figure drawing.
This was step one the very first page of 10 silhouettes. For this step, I just needed to create some silhouettes. This was done on an 18"x24" 75lb drawing paper pad and pencil. As you can tell I got comfortable around the 4th and 6th silhouettes and very comfortable on the 9th.
For the second step, I had to do the same thing as step 1 but with a material or tool, I am unfamiliar with. I chose a fine-point black Sharpie, I have never used a Sharpie for drawing before. Wierd I know, seems like one of the first things most artists use but not me. I stuck with pencil mainly because I was too afraid of not being able to erase and the ink bleeding through to the other side.
So it turns out I really like drawing with a Sharpie and it shows up better when scanning than pencil does. In this step it was to draw 10 silhouettes but with only curved lines. I really liked doing this step because it helped me find ways that I could add more natural looks to a character and also give some general muscle tone to a figure.
In this step, I was supposed to create 10 silhouettes with just one continuous line. This one was a little harder for me but it ended up looking okay.
Step 5 was to take 3 minutes on each silhouette. This turned out to be my average time on each silhouette, some taking about 30 seconds more or less but many hit around that 3-minute mark. I had a little more fun with this one and created some iconic characters. I also used a mix of pencil and sharpie, the pencil to get a very rough outline of the silhouette and then the sharpie to make the final outline, which is what took me longer on each silhouette.
This step was to create the silhouettes in motion. Many of the other steps had a lot of in-motion figures so it was becoming hard not to basically re-draw what I already had. It was fun trying to come up with some different in-motion figure but again was a challenge.
And Finally, the last step was to draw on paper then cut the silhouettes out of the paper. For this step, I was somewhat confused about whether it was to just cut them out or if I needed to use paper and light to create a silhouette. I chose to just cut them out but doing the latter would have also been fun.
After completing this project I feel I my figure drawing and my ability to let loose with drawing have evolved to a better position and I feel more comfortable when it comes to doing both after drawing 70 silhouettes.
