GEEGA VShojo Reveal
Following a change in their talent lineup and a shift away from their series of story-driven promotional material, VShojo approached me to create a different style of media to debut new talent. Working closely with my friend Dopi and the talented illustrator Mabi- while in communication with VShojo CCO Mowtendoo- we created a series of videos for the debut of their then-newest member, GEEGA.
Pre-Production
We settled on a style with a few goals in mind: to distinguish future media from past media, to establish a visual direction which would be easily recognizable if used in future materials, and to embellish the teasers with feelings of nostalgia, happiness, and unity. For these reasons, we studied MAD videos- as we felt that they embodied these traits- and did our best to dissect and replicate their visual qualities.
After our MAD-style proposal was accepted, we began searching for music to use. We felt that a certain type of music was important to compliment the visual style and communicate the feeling we were looking for, so we began by assembling a list of tracks we hoped to license. Unfortunately, we were unable to, so we chose a safer option, being reasonably assured that we could use it. We then chopped the track into separate sequences to use in a series of storyboards.
The project was intentionally split into two teasers and one reveal video. This was done in order to give ample time for excitement to build, as the videos released over the course of several days. The first video teased the envelope, indicating that a new member was coming. The second teaser gave the reveal date, and the final video debuted the new member.
Many complications and unforeseen factors caused us to make dramatic changes to the videos as we progressed. Changes included the number of debuting members, the music, and the deadline. However, having been warned that this was a possibility, Dopi and I worked in ways to minimize the impact of these changes. Some of these strategies included prioritizing scenes and illustrations which we knew would be used no matter what, avoiding animating characters to musical cues, efficient re-use of assets, and re-ordering of scenes.
Result
After working through a multitude of changes on the fly, VShojo premiered two of the teasers we made on Twitter, and the final reveal live on their Twitch channel. The teasers worked just as we’d hoped, generating plenty of excitement and questions, and the reveal seemed to be received positively as well, sending plenty of viewership over to GEEGA for her debut stream afterwards.
