Letter Form Design

This class focused on learning various typefaces used in the world as well as drawing them out by hand. Students learned over 60 typefaces and were tested on them every few weeks. At the end of the course, they had to create a type journal, which requires them to find 32 typefaces in the real-world and 25 in one of the textbook then categorize them to make a journal. All of this requires the students to recognize these typefaces and challenges them to be great typeface finders.
This project focued on creating icons from the typeface, Bauer Bodoni. We had to come up with a set of three icons that were either a human/animal, plant, man-made object, or an idea/motion. I chose to do a hunting theme and for that I did an arrow for the man-made object, a leaf for the plant, and a hoof print to represent the animal.
When getting to the typeface Caslon, the project done was a “cover-up.” That means that we had to write a 5-7 letter word and cover it up with an image or multiple images. I chose to do family in Polish and cover it up with a tree and its roots. The tree represents my family and how my roots intertwine into each other and to show how strong a family can be.
