Unlike other guitar games with toy controllers, Rocksmith lets you plug in a real guitar – any guitar – and learn how to play. This concept speaks to the idea of this being the first authentically "rock ’n’ roll" video game learning tool.
This was a next-gen launch title, a unique hybrid of raw hand-to-hand combat and super accurate motion control.
Some projects require lots of creative and production flexibility. The day before this shoot, the client decided to change the marketing tone from gritty to a non-threatening “Women’s Health” style. The photographer Tim Tadder and I were kept on our toes (literally) at the shoot, putting the models through a series of real workouts while keeping a mass-market tone. In the post-production stage I composited the models' photos on a background made up of multiple stock photos.
The in-game art style had already been established when I was briefed for this project and no 3D assets were available. Since the budget was extremely modest, I worked with an in-house illustrator on a sketch exploration. When the concept was approved, I art directed the illustration agency Ars Thanea, resulting in an cost-effective yet high-quality matte painting and CG combo. The scene highlights two of the more exciting "god-game" tools at the player’s disposal - volcanos and tsunamis.
