Recently I had the chance to explore poster concepts for the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. My client requested custom lettering, a barber razor, and meat pies. They challenged me to make design choices that clearly referenced the play, but to also sprinkle in conceptual details.
I narrowed my ideas to the following sketches:
I ultimately decided to pursue the below concept, which appears to only have obvious references to the play; however, the tablecloth has a pattern that consists of a rolling pin, blood splatter, a barber razor, and a meat pie, and the objects are placed to create the appearance of a skull.
