Serious Sans; a grown up brother to Comic Sans

Friday July 4 is Comic Sans Day again! Because of the twentieth birthday of this famous typeface
I introduce a ‘big brother’ to Comic Sans, named Serious Sans. ‘Its looks are more business like, but as the two are related you can expect enough friendliness in the new face’

Serious Sans looks like one has traced a serious typeface with a felt pen. All angles are slightly rounded and nothing is perfectly straight.’ Comic Sans’ big brother is almost done. ‘Right now I am fine tuning the spacing. At least as important as the characters themselves are the spaces between them. The amount of white between the black shapes can make or ruin the legibility of a text.’

From July fourth everyone can download Serious Sans at www.serioussans.com. There will be two versions on the net: a free one and one for a small fee. ‘The free version will contain only 69 characters; lowercase & capitals, numerals, a comma and a period and the special characters @ and copyright. The extended version will contain more than 475 glyphs, with accents for all european languages; from Iceland in the North West to Turkey in the south east. Besides there will be typographic treats like small capitals and old style numerals. The Pro version will be available for 39 euros, with an Italic and a Bold coming soon.’
