City Poster Project: Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is a city located in the NorthWest of Belgium. The city is known for their Medieval past and Flemish origins: Housing over 30 museums including wide collections of Flemish Primitive artwork and a mansion displaying all sorts of Medieval artifacts. The architecture is conservatively Gothic, with almost every building bieng a restored or renovated relic of the past. Every corner houses stores that offer the city’s iconic trademark products such as laces, fabric, textiles, chocolate, and Belgian beers.

Process Sketches:

The purpose of this project is to promote the city, using visual language to communicate the essence of Bruges, rather than it's literal depiction.

The elements of Gothic architecture explored and experimented are rendered into uniform and cohesive patterns. The patterns were rendered digitally as opposed to analog, because the architecture are of the man-made and are based on mathematics. This is contrasting, but complementary to the organic and natural waters, which metaphorically produces a harmonious relationship with the buildings in its reflections.

The medium of choice used to emulate the “feel” and look of the water ripples were Copic markers. The reason for this is because when used correctly, they are ideal for creating solid block of shapes which are reflect the stark impressionistic contrast that are seen in the waters. Water colours could have also been used, but the flow of the medium itself is too blotchy and thin and does not work well for the fragmented, contrasted nature of Bruges’ waters.
