Lipsticks & Dipsticks: Car Essentials Pour Femme

Car instruction manuals are usually meant for men. Since the project brief (An Alternative Typographic Manual) calls for an alternative approach, my Instruction Manual is targetted at women instead, and takes the form of a cosmetics kit - something which would appeal to them instead of a toolbox.

I selected a few ‘tools’ which would be essential for a woman concerned with fixing her car - sunglasses, gloves and a towel. Taking cues from women’s cosmetic products, I packaged each ‘tool’ in individual boxes with titles tackling specific problems. Instructions for solving this problems come in the form of booklets included inside, designed based on the booklets found with cosmetic products. Illustrations are used to explain the steps as this is the preferred communication tool for women, as can be seen in the cosmetic product booklets, and verified when I surveyed a group of women. The look and feel of the toolkit is based on leading cosmetic brands, making it feel elegant and stylish, thereby able to reach out to my target audience.
