Playstation 5 UI Concept (2020)

In 2019 when the first information about the Playstation 5 specification was released (but before any info on the interface itself surfaced) I started to consider what that could mean for the console’s front-end capabilities and its interface. I decided to create a personal experiment and lay out what the core UI could be visually and structurally.
I also took this opportunity to deepen my skills with Adobe XD, especially when it comes to its prototyping capabilities. I’ve worked on the project in my spare time for about two and a half months.
After the PS5 UI was fully unveiled, I was quite happy that a lot of my assumptions were correct, even if the implementation was somewhat different.

*All videos were captured directly from the prototype.

Based on the preliminary specification I built the concept of the interface on three principles:

• Speed and ease of access to core functionalities with a particular focus on access to gameplay
• A level of customization of how the user would manage their library and individual titles
• Full integration of auxiliary services like the Playstation Store and (the now defunct) Playstation Now

One of the decisions I made was regarding the animations. Most of the animations use the “snap” easing to give the perception of additional “force” behind them - the idea that the system’s power isn’t easily stopped.

At the centre of the concept was to provide players access to the gameplay as fast as possible.
That would be achieved in 2 primary ways. The first way was a deep integration of the Playstation streaming service the PS Now. A player would be able to “demo” games directly from the PS Store by streaming them. They would also be able to start playing their digital purchases immediately after buying them with streaming, which the local copy downloads in the background, with the save state retained.

Customization was an important part of the user experience for my concept.
This would have been achieved on two levels:

• Library customization, where the user would have fairly gradual control over how they order and display their collection
• Per-game customization with the ability to manage data, controller mapping or even cosmetic elements like what image is displayed in the background once the game is selected
