The focus is on refugees from African and Middle Eastern countries and their way from war and poverty to freedom and better life, in places where they can feel safe. We explored all aspects of travelling, nomad way of life and things we can change in order to achieve better future for these people. The aim is to mark all roads with our installations and reduce number of people died trying to find their way through the harmful relief in African and Eastern deserts. The project is inspired by one well known plant – the sunflower. Its natural mechanism of chasing the sun is perfect solution for gaining maximum solar energy for our installation. The solar tracking concentrator consists of 5 low cost aluminium petals. Each one adjusts itself separately and can seek the sun with the help of microprocessor, stepper motor and light sensors to determine the best angle for each petal. The conic shape with varying angels helps to distribute the light in all directions.
All segments are held together with thin steel arms, which make directing to sun possible. Each petal has one curved solar panel, measured to be effective for gaining needed energy for the big searchlight in the middle of the metaphoric flower. The light is saved into a simple battery placed into the trunk, which is made from recycled material that is secure and suitable for hot weather conditions. After midnight the 5 petals will close and make a form similar to mechanism used in searchlights. This form helps to direct the light into the sky and make it visible from dozens kilometers. Our installation can be managed by United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) and based on their analysis, to be replaced from one troubled place to another.
