Climate change, as seen through increased droughts and extreme temperatures, is a major driver of deforestation and can have significant impacts on the health and sustainability of forest ecosystems, particularly soil biodiversity. Soils are home to 25% of all species on Earth. Root architecture plays the important role of providing a secure supply of nutrients and water as well as anchorage and support. Roots can adapt to create a protective barrier against pathogens, prevent water loss and aid the process of wound healing in plants. They stabilize soil on a slope prone to landslides and protect the environment by holding the soil to reduce soil erosion. Trees not only share water and nutrients but also information through mycorrhizal networks in the soil. They send distress signals about drought, disease, insect attacks and more.
