Escape
Au cours de ma deuxième année à Saint-Luc Liège, un projet parallèle à notre cursus nous a été proposé : réaliser un livre d'artiste, c'est-à-dire détourner le format du livre pour faire ressortir via un concept original une notion qui nous représente personnellement.
J'ai choisi d'évoquer le sentiment d'évasion que procure la lecture, un thème récurrent pour moi puisque mon objectif premier est de susciter le dépaysement.
Pour la forme, mon choix s'est porté sur une saynète miniature à l'intérieur d'un livre, un medium avec lequel je suis familier étant passionné de modélisme ferroviaire. J'ai réalisé mes fonds de décor sur Photoshop, puis le décor et les fausses pages en carton-plume, la suite étant un arrangement de fournitures de modélisme pour la végétation, de patines sèches et humides pour le vieillissement, et de papier de verre pour figurer le sol goudronné.
Le "lecteur" part d'un immeuble délabré sous un ciel gris, et suit un chemin de plus en plus verdoyant. Le chemin prend une courbe et s'enfonce dans une épaisse végétation. Lorsque le lecteur se "plonge" dans le livre, il atteint un monde imaginaire où l'attend un galion, prêt à partir pour l'aventure.
La scène peut se replier sur elle-même pour fermer le livre.

During my second year in Saint-Luc Liège, a parallel project was submitted to us : conceive an artist book, which would use the shape of a book, while using it as a way to express a personnal idea of ourselves.
For my book, I chose to depict the feeling of escape that reading brings, an important topic for me, as I mainly want to give the reader the feeling of travelling.
Regarding the production of the object itself, my choice went for a model scenery that would take place inside the book, a very personal way of work since I am a model railway enthusiast. I made the backgrounds using Photoshop, then the scenery and the book page-looking sides of the layout with thin cardboard, the rest being mainly made with my modelling supplies for the plants, powders and tinted liquids for the weathering and sandpaper to figure the asphalt.
The "reader" starts by looking at an old dilapidated building under a greyish sky, and follows a path that keeps getting greener ; the path then gets into a thick vegetation, guiding the reader to the heart of the book, where, in an imaginary landscape, awaits an old galleon ready to set sail for adventure.
The whole layout can be folded, completely taking the apparence of a book.
