Dead Poets Society Book Cover Redesign

For my notion for this book I really want to catch the essence of the scene ‘o captain my captain’. This is probably the most iconic scene in the entire book where all the boys stand on the table and repeat these words so that Mr.Keating can reclaim his position as their teacher. I want to use. Beige and white to give the cover an old-school feel. I wanted to use the color red so that it can emphasize the serious tone the beautiful story actually holds. I want my cover to be easy regocnisable when thet read the O Captain My Captain scene in the book. This scene to me gives me chills every time and I wish to pull that through for the design. For the Spine of the book I want to keep it a plain red or black because that gives it a feel sophistication, that of which literature is. I want it to be easy indetifiable that there are students in the story and that rebellion, unconventionality, freedom and passion are strong themes in the story. I am planning to put everything one one artboard so that it can be ready to print immediately. I want the words Dead Poets Society to be embossed, so that it can symbolize that you ‘can feel words’ and I want a hardcover for this book to keep it originality of having an old school feel to it. I would love to stay clear of glossy finishes or any ‘odern’ type of printing methods for this cover. I want to focus more on texture for this cover. Ultimetly I want this book to represent the “O Captain My Captian” scene with a physically nice and vintage feel to it.
I went back to the foundation of using the table as an idea. So I would like to screenshot the part where todd is standing in the table in a very minimalistic illustration style and then add the word o captain my captain underneath the table. My idea for this is to keep it as plain and simple as possible as I can, because I would rather let the caption of “o captain” draw attention, letting the literature overrule the actual design to symbolize the importance of literature in the book.
After consulting with my lecturer and reviewing the options, I was guided towards choosing concept three because it has the most potential. I feel like this concept is the most practical, because even though I want to keep my design as simple as possible I feel there is a lot of room for experimenting as I go and illustrate on illustrator. In conclusion I learned that more is less, and as long as I deliver the symbolism well throughout the design I am sure it will visualize well.
After some trial and error with the elements and illustrations. I added flying papers to symbolize the rebellious theme in the movie, and I thought it would be a fun and creative way to add the name. But first it read a bit hard because the word ‘dead’ was on the right, and we usually read from left toright. And I decided to leave the quote of O Captain so that it doesn’t take away from the illustration and the name. At the end I decided to add a white brush stroke effect that looks like those white school charcoal so that it gives it a bit of texture and that old-school feel.
For my colors, I sticked to the beige, white and greys to keep it calm. These are also very old- school colors, and this is the ambience I wanted to give the book that vintage feel, so this is why using these specific light colors were important to me. Then using darker greys and blacks are symbolic because a lot of people think any story that robin Williams especially is a part of is always chirpy and happy and funny, where in this book and is the opposite, where suicide is a theme in the movie. It important to see this contras in the cover and when done reading the book you can make the connection, For the subtle red, this was key because this symbolizes seriousness and importance of the theme of literature. The overall design of the book is very simplistic and minimalistic, a little flat even. I wanted to keep to this simplistic design and because it connect with the idea of ‘young’ and ‘youthful’. I especially didn’t want to make the trousers as perfect, because it resembles as of the doodle of an actual scholar in school. The brush stroke used in the design is crucial to me, especially being in white because I wanted it to have the same look and feel to the chalkboard Mr.Keating usually draws on when giving class. Overall it’s a simple yet effective design with a bit of play with texture using the brush stroke. I used one font, to keep the design simple. But I used it in bold and in regular. I did this to not have a cluttered typefont because seeing that the title is warped, I felt like it was important to simplify the headings and subheadings with using the Athelas font. The first finishing I did on my book was embossing the words “dead poets society”. That’s all. Because I feel like that perfectly fits the theme of the story. Mr.Keating said in his first class that poems are what make us feel alive. By embossing the title alone it puts emphasis on the importance of how poems, literature, scripture and words and “emboss’ on us as humans as well. As simple as three words like ‘I love you’ or ‘ dead poet society’ can have a major effect on you as a person. My second finishing is a that I used a hardbound cover with uncoated paper. This gives it an old school feel and is still practical and strong enough for the printing and binding. For the back of the book I went with simplistic again, with no cluttering elements behind the words. I gave a brief summary of the story, l=giving the viewer a summary on the story without giving anything away at the same time. I just added the publishers under the barcode and a picture of the author. I also gave credit to the directors and producers of the movie that inspired to the making of this cover.
