BitParts

BitParts was an 18-month programme of digital art commissions happening and exhibiting across the West Midlands. FACT commissioned seven original digital artworks, ranging from complex installations to webcasts.

We were selected to undertake the work because of our proven ability to understand complex content and devise appropriate visual structures for it.
The client required an identity for the festival and a number of items of collateral, the most important of which was the exhibition guide. This was supported by invitations, promotional postcards and an information leaflet.
We worked with FACT’s commissions manager and project manager on the overall concepts. Each explanation of the commission was to be presented in the context of the artist’s previous work and the overall concept of the festival. Therefore liaison with the artists (some of whose work was still undefined when we first met them) was essential to ensure we developed design proposals that would represent their ideas and their work appropriately.

The project was characterised by a tight budget, short timescale and the absence of examples of the seven artists’ work until late in the artwork preparation stage for the exhibition guide.

Rebecca Owen, BitParts commissions manager, provides some background to this work:

‘FACT was facing a monumental point in its development with its new centre opening in Liverpool at the same time as delivering the BitParts project in the West Midlands. This meant that the Marketing and Communications department was so incredibly stretched they had little time to brief and gently nurture a design company to come up with a concept and identity for this initiative. Hands-on were incredible in this pressurised situation, coming up with beautiful branding solutions, offering fantastic client support and coming up with innovative and elegant ideas at break neck speed. Working with them was an extremely professional, rewarding and stress free experience.’

Our flexibility, coupled with the responsiveness of our suppliers, ensured that all these factors were accommodated successfully. All the collateral was delivered in time for the first private view in early February 2003.

BitParts was a very rewarding project to be involved with, and is still one of the highlights of our work.
