Reflections integrates the voices of both renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz and queen of punk rock Patti Smith. This book is my own interpretation inspired by the reflections of both woman. I was most interested in the utilization of the timely passing of their loved ones. In Annie and Patti’s lives, both experienced the loss of somebody they loved and were able to channel that emotion into their work. The typographic treatment and image placement in this book are based on the past and present. Photography is a medium that captures the here and now while reflecting is looking back at the past. I decided to play on the duality between the past and present through the reflections of both artists. When you reflect, the image is not as clear as the present because it is merely a memory. Thus, I decided to create distance between the photography and the type. The purpose behind the entire layout is to experience the book as a cohesive narrative instead of viewing it as two individual reflections.
