AFFORDABLE STUDENT HOUSING COMPETITION

AFFORDABLE STUDENTS' ACCOMMODATION

PROJECT TYPE: STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION
CLIENT: PAUSTI/JKUAT
YEAR: 2022
GROUP PROJECT
This project was part of an organised students' competition that involved designing student accommodation facilities for the PAUSTI students in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

This project was thus submitted as a group project into the competition in which the group achieved the 2nd runners up position for the work done.

The challenges within the project included coming up with a design that provided and inclusive atmosphere while at the same time offering variety for the diverse African students enrolled in the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, technology and Innovation. This is incorporated from the planning concepts all the way to the typologies.

The design also had to be coherent and contain aspects of regionalism to adhere to matters, context as a concept which was well articulated in the design elements, materials and details of construction as seen in the presentation boards that follow.

The use of brick as a material for the balconies and for cladding purposes was essentially useful since it is one of the predominant, locally available materials within the East African region. It is also the dominant material utilised in many of the existing PAUSTI and J.K.U.A.T buildings.
The other interesting feature of the accommodation units was the incorporation of a skybridge that allowed for social interaction as well the use of courtyards. These social interaction spaces improve the camaraderie among the students, both local and international.

The courtyards also provide an added advantage with provision of avenues for maximum natural lighting for the units and for proper thermal comfort in the units through natural ventilation.
