Royal Flush: A Gambling Based RPG Prototype

Royal Flush is a turn-based combat RPG prototype where various casino games impact the battle. Different characters are masters of different games and each has a different aesthetic to fit a diverse cast of characters. The ‘overworld’ of gameplay features a 2D side-scroller and as the player walks along the area, it becomes possible to initiate a battle. Battles feature a UI menu where players select various actions and can choose to participate in casino games for possible bonuses or punishments. Play @ itch.io
My Role
In Royal Flush, I served as the lead programmer and worked on the out of battle section along with building up most of the combat system from my fellow programmer's skeleton of the system.
This also involved coding in all the skills and gambling games featured in the prototype.
Initial Ideation
In the class that this prototype was developed for, we were placed into groups of 5 by our professor based on our skills. Once placed we begun to introduced ourselves and preformed various idea generating exercises before settling on a concept; a turn-based game with gambling mechanics.
Physical Prototyping
We started our development by making some ideas on how gameplay would work exactly such as the how the player would play gambling mini-games, their effects in combat, and which types of mini-games we would use. After much discussion we decided to try a physical prototype using paper, dice, and a deck of cards to emulate what the digital gameplay would be like with our classmates and professor playtesting. We found this to be a major success and proceeded to start making the game in Unity.
