With the aggressively growing level of scientific and technological development, the technology content and the level of engineering and manufacturing in product are improving continuously. The idea of integrating interaction design with product design process becomes a new paradigm. The study and application of interaction design in behavioural level has been known to researcher. However, the discussion on unconscious behaviour and visceral level of emotional design are still in short.
To authors, pen is a very close friend such a penpals who is always with them when writing. As human being, authors usually will run out of ideas to write. This situation sometimes will cause a pressure to the authors. The emotional (pressure/stress) stimulate the authors to behave/react unconsciously with the pen such as swing the pen, knock the pen, rubbing the pen, bite the pen, and clicking the pen.
Hua & Fei (2009), in their model of Obvious Need and Latent Needs Everyday Life has inspired designers to look at the value of unconscious behaviour and justified the user’s implicit needs. Based on Hua & Fei theory, designer had identified the implicit needs inspired by problem scenario.
With the concept of interactive and glowing light interaction, it can detect changes of breeze and temperature correspondingly, shift between lightening styles. The interactive glowing light is powered by solar technology applied on special black sticker with the Batik design attached on the pen. The interactive glowing light could cheer up the authors for a while and reducing the stress. The interactive concept built a positive emotional interaction
Aside the concept of product interaction innovation in emotional design, pen design’s value also enhanced by the symbolic Malaysia’s identity (batik). The recycle and low cost material (ABS, aluminium, and rubber) used in pen design and packaging would give a positive impact on ecology and reduce the pollution. The pen design is a user friendly pen together with its packaging.
Malaysian Penpals have won a silver award in Promotional Product Design Awards 2013 (Malaysia).
