In 1647, the Malleus Maleficarum was published in Germany. If Malleus Maleficarum were to be translated it would signify as Hammer of the Witches. This book was an identification guide, which explained how to torture and trial women accused of being witches. My collection was inspired by the tortures that were performed at the time. I was not inspired by images, but by the methods used in the implementation and its symbolism of the book. These accused witches were hanged, burned at the stake, beheaded, thrown into a river, tied or crushed with stones. Symbols are also used in rituals of a Wicca - a modern witch. The clothes have high collars that symbolize the hanging. Uneven sides symbolize a trial in which a woman was held at a balance, one side the woman was placed and on the other a giant book if she was lighter she was accused of being a witch. The heavy volumes at the bottom of jackets and dresses symbolize how they were tied with stones and tested to see if she would drown. The dark and gloomy colors show the obscure side of the executions, the red like fire and blood. Symbols in metal, high collars and bracelets symbolize torture, hanging, beheading, and lashing. Transparent fabrics and seams on display come from the belief that magic could be seen on the clothes of the accused therefore they would test the accused almost always in the nude. Heavier fabrics like leather and metal trims are inspired by the fact that the suspect had skin examined to see if there were any demonic signs. Thin silhouettes are inspired by the instruments of torture, such as a sharp needle. Vests and tight bustier refer to the tying of a suspect and suffocation. In conclusion, it is a collection of various shapes with a gloomy inspiration seen as delicate beauty.
