The first feature film to be directed by D.B. Nihalsinghe, Welikatara is also the first full length Sinhala feature film in widescreen. The story unfolds on the spectacular backdrop of the vast sand dunes of Maruthankerni, off Point Pedro in the Jaffna Penninsula. The conflict between a law enforcing officer, and a tough racketeer who holds sway over an underground network, moves on a strong physical level like in the American Western.
