Народы Мезоамерики майя широко использовали маски, и делали они это, прежде всего, согласно религиозным представлениям и в конкретных строго регламентированных жизненных ситуациях.
Во-первых, своих богов майя часто изображали в виде масок. Спектр такого рода изображений достаточно широк: от масок, надеваемых жрецами майя в обрядах, посвященных тому или иному богу (он был изображен на маске), до огромных масок-личин, создававшихся на фасадах и алтарях маянских храмов. Кроме того, маски богов можно обнаружить на домашней утвари индейцев, предметах культа (например, курильницах священного копала), погребальных урнах и прочих предметах религиозно-бытового обихода.
Вы можете возразить, что изображения богов майя являются просто изображениями, и маски тут ни при чем. И я бы полностью согласился с вами, если бы не пара «но». Изображения божеств на вышеуказанных предметах выполнены таким образом, что при взгляде на них создается впечатление их «прикрепленности» к поверхности. Объемной у майя изображается не вся голова бога или богини, а лишь их лицевая часть, четко обрисованная и как бы наложенная на плоскость. И еще, мы уже знаем на примере ацтеков,что маска у индейцев Центральной Америки являлась своего рода иконой (в европейском понимании этого слова), и, будучи надетой на тот или иной предмет, маска освящала последний. В связи с этим уместно предположить, что маски богов майя помещали на алтари и поклонялись им как европейцы иконам.
Во-вторых, майя использовали маски в религиозно-мифологических представлениях, которые также можно считать зачатками индейского театра. В такого рода представлениях майя также изображали богов или своих вождей, народных героев, оставшихся в эпической памяти народа. Эти маски были гротескного вида, и могут быть сравнимы с масками древнегреческого театра, выросшего также из религиозных обрядов в честь греческого бога Диониса.
В-третьих, маски широко применялись индейцами майя в обряде жертвоприношения. Мы уже знаем (и это доказанный факт), что помощниками жреца накума, совершавшего человеческое жертвоприношение, были четверо старейшин, так называемых чака, обязательно скрывавших свое лицо под ритуальными масками, изображающие богов (напрашивается сравнение с маской европейского палача, хотя это сравнение и некорректно).
И наконец, широко известны погребальные маски майя, хорошо сохранившиеся благодаря материалу, из которого они создавались, и поэтому, дошедшие до нас практически в первозданном виде
