Conan the Barbarian - Official Website
"I live. I love. I slay... I am content."- Conan The Barbarian
Having thrived and evolved for eight consecutive decades in the public imagination- in prose and graphics, on the big screen and small, in games and properties of all kinds - Conan's exploits in the Hyborian Age are being brought to life in a colossal summer 3d action-adventure film for a new generation of audiences. The movie has been adapted from the original works of Robert E. Howard and is faithful to the mythology and psychology of the iconic barbarian.

To promote the film, we needed to create a site that felt epic, larger than life, and remained true to the character's mythos, all while clearly communicating the action elements of the film. We created 7 matte-painted, fully-animated landscapes based off of locations in the fictional world of Hyboria, and asked users to explore each landscape by panning, discovering hidden objects, and browsing film content.

The site proved to be a technically challenging feat, combining atmospheric animation, layer effects and layer-upon-layer of parallax movement without overtly frustrating the visitor's computer.

We think this review from "The Film Informant" sums up the site quite nicely:
"What a treat. A visual euphoria, satisfying the senses to a new level. This isn’t a website, it’s an experience unparalleled to anything you’ll find on the web. Perched in a cave looking down on the world of Conan, the map page induces the feeling of being the “Overseer.” Enter into the story page, and you’re transferred to ground zero, in the thick of the fight. Wait, there’s content on this page? I’m sorry, I’m too busy staring at the skull mountain bursting with a flowing waterfall."

The site opens with a bloody, flaming sword stabbing through the middle of the page, tearing from left to right, then disappearing behind the tear. The top and bottom of the page burn away, revealing a larger-than-life map of Hyboria.
The preloader is a flaming shield, forged from Acheronian iron, and adorned with a skull
