SUNRAY - Conceptual Model

SUNRAY
Conceptual Model

In designing for the Sydney Design Week 2020 Hybrid Exhibition we were asked to consider the future of 2030. The collective that we founded created domestic lighting solutions that incorporated principles of light and colour theory to foster positive wellbeing in a future of information overload. Through a series of tissue sessions with industry professionals and collaboration with a team of designers, I iterated prototypes of a conceptual model - dynamic colour based ambient living room sconces to act as a customisable domestic art piece, a point of reflection, and respite from the weight of the world outside.

This work was selected for the Museum of Applied Arts and Science Sydney Design Week
Hybrid Online Student Exhibition.
Sun Ray creates space efficient and ambient mood affective lighting using colour psychology to influence emotions. The purpose of the design is to re-empower the user in a world they have no control over. By giving people control over their domestic environment through choice of colour and direction, users can feel a sense of freedom while improving their wellbeing through colourful creative expression in seemingly
mundane spaces. Decreased living spaces creates the need for space efficient lighting solutions, so this sconce reimagines how light is displayed by maximising empty wall spaces as a canvas.

Sun Ray has a conceptual core rooted in colour and light. Colour itself is a pure and simple universal communicator that transcends boundaries and cultures, while at the same time celebrating diversity. Light, especially sunlight, is hopeful and symbolic of life, growth, and time. In the context of this design, light is used to contemplate the continuity of life and encourage an optimistic perspective of the future despite current circumstances. Visually, the design draws from this concept by drawing inspiration from the linear and directional qualities of sun rays.
