Reborn Chocolate
Self-Initiated Project* || January 2023
The Mexican cocoa industry, regarded as the birthplace of chocolate, dates back to the times of the Maya civilisation. While it remained unknown to the world, chocolate had an abundant presence in Mayan culture. It was used in rituals and even consumed as a daily beverage. Nowadays, the Mexican cocoa industry has declined severely.
The goal of Reborn Chocolate is to help cocoa farmers across Mexico and boost the industry; to bring chocolate back home!
*This packaging project took part in the 2023 EPDA Future Packaging Award competition and won the Gold Junior Award.
The shape of the packaging can be described as an abstract form of a cocoa pod; the literal origin of chocolate. The packaging is made of cocoa paper, a biodegradable paper mixed with cocoa bean shells. Technically speaking, the very material that once protected the cocoa beans are now used to protect the chocolates.
