Baba Nyonya Kumiko Lamp: Hinolamp

Hinolamp
A Kumiko and Baba Nyonya Night Lamp

This project was conceived during my internship to celebrate the Malaysia Independence Day 2023
and hope to be held as a build together workshop in August.

What is Hinolamp?
Hinolamp is a lamp that combines Japanese fine woodworking technique and Malaysian Baba Nyonya traditional tiles pattern. Baba Nyonya, also known as Peranakan or Straits Chinese, is a unique culture that originated from the intermarriage of Chinese and Malay communities in the Malay Archipelago during the 15th century. One of the distinctive features of Baba Nyonya culture is the use of colorful and intricate tile patterns in their architecture and interior design. These tiles are known as Peranakan tiles or Nyonya tiles, and they are used extensively in Baba Nyonya homes, temples, and other buildings. The use of Peranakan tiles in Baba Nyonya architecture and interior design is a reflection of the culture's unique blend of Chinese and Malay influences. The tiles not only serve a decorative purpose but also tell a story of the Baba Nyonya people's history and cultural heritage.
