When I was a child, I poured over the pages of Lucy Maxym’s Russian Lacquer, Legends and Fairy Tales. It was the images from these books, of traditional Russian lacquer boxes with fantastic fairytale scenes, that came to mind when reading and listening to Into the Woods. The deep black backgrounds were suddenly like a stage, and the bright scenery and characters like sets and costumed actors before a velvet black curtain.

The lacquered scenes depicted key moments of folk tales, when characters learned important lessons. Lessons like ‘be careful what you wish for’ or ‘you only realize what you have once you’ve lost it’. Lessons the Baker, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack painfully experience. And so, with these parallels in mind, I present selected renderings from my Russian Lacquered Into the Woods.
