Final Essay
For my final project, I came up with a few ideas, but one really stood out to me. I did a series of overlay pictures of aging roses overlaid on pictures of my 95 year old Lola(grandma) who passed away on April 8th of this year. The name of the project is “Lola Rose”. It is something that I made and will laminate to hang up over her box of ashes in her house.
I chose to put my Lola and roses together because as long as I’ve known her, she has always had the most amazing rose garden in her backyard. Every summer, she was up early every morning watering her plants and flowers, making them the best they can be. The first picture of my Lola when she was a teenager is linked with a rosebud. Next, a picture of my Lola when she became a woman in her thirties is linked with a picture of a fully blossomed rose garden. Lastly, a picture of my Lola when she was in her 90s is linked with a bouquet of dead roses, but that is still beautiful like her.
The type of emotions that this topic/project will bring out of the viewer are probably sadness, but admiration at that same time due to the beauty of my Lola and the roses. It will evoke emotions in the viewer because it shows how she aged slowly, but gracefully: the same way roses do.
I can see my work being shown in a coffee shop. It is a simple, but artistic series of pictures that would fit nicely in a small coffee shop against brick walls with christmas lights everywhere. Also, it would go perfect in a family living room, say above the fire place or in the dining room at the head of the table.
In conclusion, Lola Rose is just the way I imagined it to be. Throughout the year, I finessed in doing overlay pictures so I think this was a great idea for my final project. These three pictures portray my Lola’s elegance, her sweet face, and her everlasting beauty and grace. I just hope my uncle will appreciate these pictures and maybe hang them up in his house over his fireplace where I envision Lola Rose to be.
