Gullstén-Inkinen designed the Burger King restaurant in Helsinki central railway station.

The Helsinki central railway station is a listed historical building designed by Eliel Saarinen. It was opened in 1914. Due to the building’s historical value all the design was done in close cooperation with the National Board of Antiquities.

 

Burger King’s design guidelines gave room for the restaurant to be implemented in the unique space. No structural changes were made in the big hall. One of the biggest concerns during the process was the massive wall fresco Koli designed by Eero Järnefelt above the service desk; would it be affected by the kitchen grease fumes. The fresco is now protected with powerful air conditioning. Original chairs can be found among the new concept furniture, both fit perfectly in the old hall.

 

Cooperation with Burger King began in 2013 when Gullstén-Inkinen commissioned to design the first Burger King restaurant in Mannerheimintie. There are also plans for more restaurants to be opened around Finland.

Gullstén-Inkinen has long experience working with listed buildings and historic sites.
