The Medea of Euripides: Universiry Set Design Project

University Set Design Project
German expressionism was chosen as the main/inspirational direction for this project.
The chosen genre perfectly conveys the internal unstable state of the main character Medea of the play by Euripides, as well as the themes that the play reveals.
Medea's character was the first to be designed, from which later I drew inspiration for other character designs. The silhouette was inspired by classic German Expressionism films as well as Greek costumes. Main colour palette: black & red and, later, gold & white.
The slide shows sketches of Medea's costume at the beginning of the play, when the heroine found out about the betrayal of her husband, Jason. The red necklace was added as a reference to the murder of Medea's brother, since the past of the heroine was not described by Euripides in the play.
The slide shows options for Medea's costume in the second part of the play, when Medea decides to take revenge on her ex-husband. The appearance of the demigoddess returns, and in the final variant the black colour disappears, which was a symbol of her grief at the beginning.
Final Chosen Costume Designs for Medea.
The main idea of Jason's costume is that the further the events in the play develop, the less rich his clothes become. This shows that the hero lost everything in the aftermath because of his actions.
The costumes of the sons of Medea and Jason are a combination of elements of their parents' clothing.
Costume designs for Choir and King Creon.
Set design options for the first and second parts of the play.
