Krisztina Noémi Kiss's profile

Jenő Barcsay (Exhibition catalogue)

The oeuvre of Jenő Barcsay – one of the most prominent and influential Hungarian painters of the 20th century whose body of work laid the foundations for a new school of art – is integrally connected to the town of Szentendre. Alongside the classical tradition and modern artistic aspirations,
his artistic approach was shaped by his constant experimentation in painting. By creating a tension between a perspective of space based purely on what is seen, geometric construction and figurativity, he left an unparalleled oeuvre behind. In addition to painting, he had a significant body
of graphic and mural works as well.
From one painting to the next, Jenő Barcsay experimented with the relationship between space and form, and the structure of the image and its proportions. Through his detailed and meticulous study of the landscape, the mesmerising details of Szentendre’s townscape increasingly became the thematic focus of his art. In his oil paintings, constructs developed from contours gave way to images built from patches of colour and geometric forms.
