Kaira ice boat is a development of traditional ice boat construction which is designed to take part in Baikal Ice Racing competition. Ice boats are strictly wind powered and need relatively snow-free ice to sail and Baikal lake can provide all this conditions during the season.
This modern ice yacht is made of a steel stave the entire length of the boat, in which the mast is stepped, and a runner-plank upon which it rests at right angles, the two forming a kite-shaped frame. Three steel skates, or runners, are attached on the edges and the backone can be turned by the tiller. The sportsman sits upon the mast and can control the rope netting to increase or decrease the speed provided by canvas.
Compact size, foldable construction and a very active class organization increases its appeal.
The image was inspired by a sea-bird because of the ability of canvas to act like a wing on high speed.
The Kaira is an excellent boat for those seeking spirited on-design racing.
