The concept behind the interior design of the restaurant was driven by the idea of creating three distinct spaces that celebrate the diverse flora and fauna of regions across South Africa. Each space is connected but maintains its own identity. Drawing inspiration from the name Smoke, we explored a myriad of raw materials such as terrazzo stone, clay, terracotta, concrete and plaster to develop a material palette that could be shaped, sculpted, polished, fired or transformed leaving traces of their natural and imperfect beauty in the finished product.

These elements were paired with vibrant accents and luminous shades of linen, woven textiles, leather and rattan to create a seasonal dining experience from dawn through to dusk. Colours across the spaces are inspired by the local context - the design of the north terrace for instance draws from the varying shades and textures of the stone wall, pavement and indigenous landscaping that forms a backdrop to the street edge.

The brunch bar is a warm and inviting cafe setting with soft lines within a sunlit voluminous space. There are comfortable and welcoming seating areas, and a cosy fireplace within a lounge setting. A muted palette of light polished concrete, terrazzo stone, tactile stucco plaster surfaces, soothing shades of vanilla and oak timber. The backdrop to the bunch bar is a dramatic textured mural representing contours within the Pretoria region. The colours are inspired by the suspended botanical installation by Bloom space. It was important throughout the design process to engage with local furniture designers to showcase South African contemporary design in a restaurant that celebrates South African heritage.

The terrace facing the courtyard mimics a comfortable farm ‘stoep’ amidst a canopy of trees and indigenous planting. The furniture selection is an arrangement of comfortable sofas, occasional chairs and loose rugs grouped around the outdoor fireplace. Adjacent to the terrace are five individually styled restrooms each with a distinct colour palette representing regions across South Africa.

The courtyard is the heart of Smoke and connects the Brunch Bar to the Capital Bar through the canopy of trees. Furniture is arranged in communal tables or shared benches around fire pits to create an atmosphere of sharing and community. The focal point of the courtyard is the fire pit which brings to life this unique cooking experience.

The capital bar is a celebration of the capital city and a dining space that proudly shares insights into the history and legacy of Pretoria. Parquet wooden floors, polished stone, brass, mirrors, leather and heavy drapery add a touch of sophistication to the interiors. The main feature of the capital bar is the bar itself which sits below a glowing canopy inspired by the purple blossoms of the iconic Jacaranda tree. Large oversized pendants define the dining area, creating a pattern of dappled light across the restaurant. Within the capital bar is the whisky lounge; an intimate alcove with plush velvet sofas and leather wing back chairs. Rich natural timbers, brass pendants, mirror panelling and a lavish colourful rug, and a touch of warmth and luxury to this unique space.
