THE TASK
This was a college assignment in which we had to take text from an article and present it as a double page magazine spread.
I took my post from decerto.net where they had recently covered the insomnia gaming festival. I myself had been to a previous insomia event, I had some of my own photos and used some that weere in the article allready.
Design Choices
My first goal was to create a captivating title that not only explained the article to the reader but also encouraged them to read through it. I maintained a consistent colour scheme throughout the piece, which the title makes good use of. I feel this brings it all together very nicely.
I used the full colour palate in the title defining the whole style and content of the article. I also did this with the wording; ‘Good LAN & Bad LAN’. The article alternates between good and bad points, I emphasized this by highlighting the G and B in good and bad.
The first paragraph is large and text heavy so I increased the size of some text and made some other extracts bolder. This was because I wanted the user to be able to scan read it and sees what the piece was about. It also emphasized the key points of that section.
Composition
There is a lot going on in this middle third of the page, most of it text. Besides from the first and last paragraph there wasn’t much order to the sections so I broke it up and varied the shapes of columns. This makes it easier for the reader to find what they want, which I believe is the point here.
Content
The second page features many elements and styles used in the first, however I would like to highlight the images, advertisement to the left and closing quote.
The add to the right reflects the one on the first page, I felt that it looked to symmetrical and boxy so varied it in position and design.
The images in this article each have a stylish tag to label who is in them and which article they relate to.
My final quote is taken from an article by a well-known figure in the community. Whilst it was taken before this article was written it summarises is and explains his views.
Images
Most of the photos I took myself, whilst they did not cover this specific event I did take them at the one previous to this.
The first image I used was a backdrop covering the whole lowers half of the double page spread. It not only adds depth but it highlights the magnitude of the event showing the hundreds of people there.
After I had added all the text and images I thought it felt empty and still a little dull. This is when I added the two bright circular adds either side. It brings allot more colour to the design and compliments the theme. I originally had them parallel, but I didn’t like it too symmetrical. I made one smaller and lowered it causing the design to be much more balanced.
