The Haunting of Hill House Book Cover Illustration

I created the illustration for cover of
Shirley Jackson's horror novel
"The Haunting of Hill House".

Here you can find the mockups
and the whole process of creation
of my version of the cover.

The front side illustration.

I love soft pencils and chalk textures,
so I aspired to make the illustration look like
a hand-drawn pencil artwork.
The back side illustration.

Shirley Jackson is a remarkable author
and I find it necessary
to tell something about her
on the back side of the book cover.
Main characters design.

I wanted to make the main character of the novel,
Eleanor Vance
look modern and close to our age
so it would be easier
to get emotionally involved
into her story.
And what a horror novel without a ghost?

I tried to design my version of the ghost to be
both easily recognizable and dramatically touching our hearts.
The ghost is an emotion
Terrifying, troubling our minds, and so familiar to everyone.
The sketch.

I was playing with the forms of both the house and the characters so as to make the silhouettes simple and balanced.
The color palette.

I assume the horror novel cover should be both spooky and eye catching
So I used the rough color spots technique to find a perfect palette.
Here is the 1 minute timelapse
of how I was working
on the illustration.

The whole process of creating the illustration starting with the concepting and finishing with the current result.

I use Clip Studio Paint Pro to draw my illustrations.
