Introduction

Conducted across 3 states in India, this study sought to understand branchless banking and international remittances across diverse socio-economic classes and indicate future service and transactional scenarios around the same.

Device Enabled Branchless Banking
Process

An intensive probe was undertaken into agent based community banking models and informal local financial systems, along with peripherals such as KYC procedures and biometrics. Through secondary research, domain expert knowledge, contextual user ethnographies, visual culture and media mapping, insight was gained into the money management models of lower income users.

Data was extracted and modelled through scenario building, failure case analysis and futures workshops. Key future financial behavioural models, future networking, communication and transactional scenarios, were articulated.

A mobile based branchless banking system was designed along with various iterations of schemes. These were represented through low and medium fidelity prototypes for quick execution by the client.

Value Addition

Unique challenges to rural and peri - urban financial negotiations were identified through qualitative research methods. Insights were gained around the influence of kinship patterns on communication, systemic and policy changes in branchless banking, technology learning and barriers to uptake, as well as distinct challenges related to farmers and migrants.

A cross demographic and geographic analysis of financial need was undertaken. Each challenge was modelled into a solution and iterated according to financial need, existing use cases, key challenges, a proposed solution along with key features, technology used and conditions.

A mobile system was developed and the systems and processes were detailed out from opening a mobile banking account to terminating it.

Each concept was positioned into Telenor’s existing strategy, in terms of user segments and user attributes through a service - market matrix on short and long term basis.
