My final for my second semester of drawing at RISD was a series of 50 drawings exploring a topic of choice. I chose the subject "light and shadow" because I wanted to investigate a variety of different subject matters with a permeating theme. I initially struggled with the balance of light and shadow, often making my tones too dark and focusing too much on replicating the actual forms of my study. My drawings improved as I began to notice the fluid movement of light within a form, focusing on the connections of shapes rather than rendering detached parts. My series evolved throughout the process, starting from dark tonal still lives and ending with more gestural self-portraits. I greatly enjoyed finding the connection between tone and line throughout my exploration of the series.
