LIVE PERFORMANCE PROJECT
Developed by Rufiyan Ramli & Ammar Hazman
1. Concept

The project centers around the theme of "Life in the Sea" and seeks to showcase the mesmerizing beauty of life in the marine ecosystem. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the significance of marine life and promote conservation efforts. By employing projection mapping and generative visuals, the project immerses viewers in a visually stunning underwater world. It aims to evoke a sense of wonder and appreciation for the diverse creatures that inhabit our seas, fostering a deeper connection with these often unseen wonders of the deep.

Through this immersive experience, the project also aims to educate and inspire. It highlights the delicate nature of marine ecosystems. By evoking empathy and a sense of responsibility, the visual in the project encourages viewers to become more participating for marine conservation and take action in safeguard our oceans for future generations.

Overall, the project's purpose is to use art and technology to shine a spotlight on the captivating beauty of marine life and ignite a passion for protecting our seas. It aims to create a lasting impact by fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of marine ecosystems and inspiring individuals to become stewards of the seas in their own lives.

2.1 Interactivity Concept

A key concept in the project involves utilizing the Kinect sensor and web camera to capture audience movements and silhouettes, fostering a deeper connection between the viewers and the sea and its inhabitants. The Kinect sensor detects the audience's body movements, allowing them to become active participants in the visual experience. As they move and interact within the installation space, their actions trigger dynamic responses in the projected visuals, creating a sense of co-creation and collaboration between the audience and the artwork.

The web camera plays a vital role in capturing the audience's silhouettes and seamlessly integrating them into the visuals. By overlaying the silhouettes with generative elements, such as bubbles or marine life forms, the audience becomes visually immersed within the underwater world. This interaction not only adds a personal touch to the experience but also serves as a reminder of our interconnectedness with the marine ecosystem. The audience sees themselves as part of the artwork, blurring the boundaries between observer and observed, and instilling a sense of empathy and responsibility towards the preservation of marine life.

By incorporating the Kinect sensor and web camera, the project transcends traditional passive viewing and transforms into an interactive and participatory encounter. This concept enables the audience to physically engage with the visuals, creating a more profound and memorable experience. The audience's movements and silhouettes become integral components of the artwork, evoking a sense of belonging and fostering a deeper connection with the sea and its inhabitants.

2. Technology Application

TouchDesigner

The centerpiece of our technology application, TouchDesigner serves as the fundamental software for our project. With its node-based interface and extensive toolkit, TouchDesigner empowers us to design, control, and project visually stunning and dynamic artworks that capture the essence of marine life. It provides us with the necessary tools and capabilities to generate intricate and captivating visuals that bring the underwater world to life.

Kinect v2 Motion Sensing

Leveraging the capabilities of the Kinect sensor within TouchDesigner, we incorporate interactive elements based on audience movements and gestures. By capturing and translating the audience's motions into the projected visuals, we create an immersive experience that encourages active engagement. The Kinect sensor enables us to establish a direct connection between the viewers and the marine life represented, fostering a deeper sense of interaction and involvement.

Webcam

The integration of a webcam enhances the interactivity of our project. By capturing the silhouettes of the audience, we seamlessly incorporate their presence into the visuals. This integration creates a sense of unity and participation, allowing the viewers to see themselves as part of the underwater environment. The webcam input adds an extra layer of engagement and personalization to the artwork.

High-Quality Projector

The projection element plays a crucial role in our technology application, as it enables us to showcase the visuals on a larger scale. By utilizing a high-quality projector, we ensure that the projected visuals are displayed with exceptional clarity and detail. This immersive projection transforms the exhibition space into a captivating underwater realm, blurring the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds.

In summary, our technology application encompasses the utilization of TouchDesigner as the primary software, the integration of Kinect motion sensing and webcam input for interactivity, and the use of a high-quality projector for immersive projection. These technological components work harmoniously together to create an immersive and interactive experience that brings the beauty of marine life to the forefront and raises awareness about ocean conservation.
3. Organization

3.1 Technical Setup

Before the execution of the project, several considerations must be made. One of the key factors is the availability of materials, especially in relation to the quality of projection. In projects involving projection mapping, it is crucial to ensure a high standard of visual quality. However, due to resource constraints for this prototype, we worked with the available materials to the best of our ability.

A setback we encountered during development was the use of an outdated Kinect device, which proved to be incompatible with most new software on the main computer. For future improvements to the prototype, it would be advisable to invest in Intel RealSense or Leap Motion or the latest motion sensing devices to achieve seamless and enhanced interactive integration.

Throughout the development of the prototype, all elements were created within the powerful Touchdesigner software. This software allowed us to integrate various types of device inputs, such as the webcam and Kinect, for the specific requirements of the prototype. Although there were minor challenges along the way, they can be addressed and improved upon in future works.
Tools needed for project development:
3D Mockup
Interactive Flow
Future Developement Idea

One exciting avenue for expanding the project is creating interactive visual walkable pathways that immerse the audience without their explicit participation. LED screens can seamlessly integrate into the environment, providing a smooth experience even with a large number of people. This approach works well in tight spaces where traditional projection mapping is impractical. Interactive pathways invite participants to explore an enchanting underwater world, with visuals responding to their movements. Adding sea life audio enhances the immersive experience, transporting the audience deeper into the underwater realm. These developments create a fully immersive installation that educates and captivates viewers about the importance of marine life.
4.0 Live Performance Show

The live performance show will feature a carefully choreographed sequence of visuals of sea life and interactivity all working together to create a captivating and unforgettable experience. The visuals will dynamically respond to the audience's movements, with bubbles reacting and flowing in sync with their gestures. The incorporation of the audience's silhouettes into the visuals adds a personal touch, allowing each person to feel immersed in the underwater world.

Throughout the performance, the narrative of marine life remediation and conservation will be subtly woven into the visuals and interactions, prompting reflection and inspiring a sense of responsibility towards protecting our oceans. By combining technological innovation, artistic expression, and audience engagement, the live performance show aims to create a transformative experience that leaves a lasting impression on the audience, instilling a desire to take action and make a positive impact on the future of our seas.

In conclusion, the live performance show serves as the culmination of the project, providing an immersive and interactive experience that showcases the mesmerizing beauty of marine life. Through a carefully choreographed sequence of visuals, interactivity, the performance aims to evoke emotions, raise awareness about marine conservation, and inspire the audience to become stewards of our oceans.
