This project explores the theme of ageing. For architecture, a building will historically age in terms of its different functionalities in the past. Alternatively, a building’s physical ageing is seen through the decay in its materiality and the need for maintenance over time.
The Brock Keep, a former armoury-turned exhibition and studio space located in Oxford Road, Reading, is no exception to the ageing phenomenon. In need of repair, this project focuses on creating a temporary exhibition space within the proximity of the Grade II listed building.
The temporary spacing is representative of the overlooked yet inevitable ageing process, ranging from the use of materials to the circulation of visitors. Ultimately, the project conveys one explicit meaning:
Change isn’t straightforward.
