Your Dose of Local

Given the prompt to make a first-day cover related to a contemporary social issue, I decided to do a project on local music. Being in the music scene myself, I always realised that there are a lot of good local artists in Singapore left undiscovered and underappreciated.

This phenomenon of cultural cringe is often associated with locally produced music. With this project, I decided to bring social awareness to this issue that is left undiscussed in our society. I believe it is time we start appreciating music made by locals, for locals.

This poster is made with the combination of the elements in the stamps, ensuring consistency. It also includes all the artists mentioned in each stamp.

In the varied design of the stamps, I tried to incorporate the different music instruments used in that particular genre of music. This is represented through shapes symbolic of the instrument’s prominent features. Take for example, the accordion and flute in fusion music

These pictures highlight the template I made for my first day cover, I wanted them to make it into the CD-cover hence the fold. It was made double sided such that the stamps are featured on both outside and inside.

Interior page that highlights the Singaporean music scene and the stamps.
Exterior page that features the postage stamps and a stamp that indicates it as a first day cover.
