はまる + まめ = はまめ
Hamaru + Mame = Hamame
Interlocking + Beans = Hamame
The word はまる"hamaru" means "interlocking" or "fitting," and まめ "mame" means "beans" in Japanese. The name of this chair comes from these two words which both indicate a sense of multiplicity and repetition. The chair consists of rectangular boards with small slits which can be constructed anyway a user wants, such as a bench, table, or a single chair. The slits are loose enough so even small kids can build their own chair. For comfort, I installed bean-shaped cushions in two colors.
