Fluid Impressions: Etched Topographic Trinket Bowls

I am thrilled to share a project with you that explores the concept of movement within a solid object, taking inspiration from the abstract topography of Mt. Eden. In this project, I embarked on a journey to portray the dynamic essence of fluidity by etching metal, specifically aluminum, with the intricate lines of topography. By spending hours meticulously working on each piece, carefully peeling off bits of the sticker in the acid bath, I created a range of depth and texture that captures the essence of movement.

The process of etching the flowing lines of topography into the aluminum material was a labor of love. I wanted to ensure that each piece exhibited a sense of depth and roughness, truly evoking the organic nature of the landforms. The hours spent in the acid bath, slowly revealing the intricate details, allowed me to achieve a nuanced and captivating representation of movement within a solid object. The delicate balance of control and unpredictability in the etching process added an element of artistic serendipity to the final outcome.

To transform these etched metal pieces into functional items, I decided to repurpose them as small trinket bowls. Each piece underwent a meticulous hammering process, shaping them into unique and practical containers. The marriage of artistic expression and functional design resulted in a collection of trinket bowls that not only embody the fluidity of movement but also serve as beautiful and useful objects in daily life.

I am immensely proud of the final outcome of these designs. The combination of abstract topography, metal etching, and the transformation into functional trinket bowls resulted in a series of pieces that are both visually striking and purposeful. The interplay between the organic lines of the landforms and the rigidness of the metal material creates a captivating juxtaposition, bringing the essence of movement and natural landscapes into everyday objects.
