Montreal Housing Crisis 2023
In the midst of the Montreal Housing Crisis protest in 2023, I captured powerful moments of unity and determination. The atmosphere buzzed with passion as people from all walks of life joined forces against unaffordable housing and gentrification. Powerful signs, bold banners, and chants created a lively scene, demanding the government to take action. My hope was to adequately capture the spirit of the protest and the unwavering resolve of Montreal's citizens fighting for accessible housing.
In Montreal, 1 in 5 households can’t afford both rent and other basic needs.
The waitlist for social housing in Montreal has reached a staggering 50,000 households, resulting in extensive delays and leaving many vulnerable individuals and families without adequate housing options.
The average wait time for subsidized housing in Montreal is approximately 3 to 5 years, leaving many individuals and families in precarious living situations while they wait for assistance.
The vacancy rate for affordable rental units in Montreal is a mere 1.5%, leading to intense competition and limited options for those seeking affordable housing.
The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Montreal consumes approximately 50% of a young person's median income, making it increasingly difficult for them to afford suitable housing.
Over 8,000 individuals in Montreal are estimated to be experiencing homelessness, with limited access to safe and stable housing.
Rent prices in Montreal have surged by 40% in the last decade, significantly outpacing wage growth and putting immense strain on residents' budgets.
Gentrification has led to the displacement of marginalized communities, with over 30,000 low-income households forced to leave their neighborhoods in the past decade.
Due to limited pet-friendly housing options, approximately 40% of pet owners in Montreal are forced to make the difficult decision to give up their beloved pets when facing housing instability.
