Women's Career Breaks in Korea

This infographic poster talks about statistics of women who are having career breaks in South Korea. Although our society encourages both spouses working, the burden of household works and child-rearing is still on women. It is shown that marriage, pregnancy and child caring is the most frequented reason for women to resign from work. After having a career gap, it becomes much harder for a woman to go back to work and have a decent job.
A poll in 2013 shows that 27.2% of women do household work solely herself and 51.9% of women do it mainly and their husbands help a little. Only 18.8% of spouses shares household chores equally in Seoul. Furthermore, there aren't effective measures on childcare from the government yet and it is so hard to take a childcare leave for women in most companies, let alone men.
Personally, my previous team leader left because she got pregnant and there was no one to take care of her child. If there were enough good childcare institutions and government support, she could have been able to continue her career. I know more people who had resigned for such reasons and this is only a fraction of the whole thing.
I guess we still have a long way to go, but certainly things are slowly getting better. I hope this piece of work make a small contribution on people experiencing career breaks.
