[ About ]
Studio 8 is a Jordanian non-for-profit company active in the fields of dance. It was founded 2014 by a group of young artists aiming to shape and humanize the dance art through innovation, experiment, development, exchange, education and research.

It is at the heart of the Studio 8’s mission to increase access to dance, to increase opportunities for cultural expression and awareness.

We believe dance has long been at the forefront of the performing arts in Jordan, in raising awareness and nourished dreams of change and reintroduced concepts such as freedom, human dignity and justice to our society. But the participation in arts-based subjects for local dancers and choreographers, appears near the edge of extinction. In the past more 10 years, the founders of Studio 8 have been working at different levels of dance performance and dance transmission, and have seen the rapid disappearance of dance encounters of international, regional and local dance performances and training. Local choreographers, performers, dance makers struggle to sustain their individual or collaborative creativity. People, especially children and youth, are cut off from dance and it seems that the opportunity to even begin to generate an interest in dance is no longer provided or valued.

In direct response to feedback from dancers who expressed a need for more in-depth support for education, development and dance professionalization of Amman, Studio 8 was born to tackle this creative crisis in the art of making dances. For the past 5 years, Studio 8 has collaborated with more than 400 people of 32 nationalities in creating 4 original dance productions, given more than 30 performances organizing more than 100 classes and workshops, launching an independent international contemporary dance festival, making almost 100 dance videos, co-creating residency, exhibition, dance discussion, community art walk and street art fair.

Studio 8’s primary target group are dance artists, include dancers, choreographers, designers, composers, art managers, musicians, as well as performing-arts-interested individuals from Jordanian general public. For the past 5 years, Studio 8 has reached out to the large young population in the kingdom (more than 70% of the population of Jordan is under 30 years of age), provided training opportunities to more than 700 people mostly under 25, reached nearly 6000 audiences through live performance. Among them, many were exposed to modern dance as an art for the first time.

In late 2019, Studio 8 had an opportunity to rehabilitated an office space in central Amman into a dance lab which serves as a hub that brings the dance community together. The lab includes a dynamic practice space with dance floor, a workshop/exhibition space and a library. In the same year, Studio 8 began its partnership with Swiss organization Drosos Foundation focusing on organizational capability building. Finally, Studio became a Prince Claus Fund Network Partner in 2020. It will be contributing to a global network of strong and relevant cultural/arts organizations in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean.
