Montreal is the home of BIXI, a very popular Free Bike service. Since it's inception in 2009, it has introduced over 5 thousand bikes and approximately 500 bike docks, dispersed over the island. This has pleased Montrealers and visitors alike and the concept has since been sold to cities like London, New York and Toronto.

 

Unfortunately, on January 20th 2014, the public Bike System filed for Bankruptcy protection under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. The city is now assuring Montrealers that the service will continue for the upcoming year, but can't commit on its availability for the years to come.
