Montana|Finse at the Bergen International Wood Festival

Montana|Finse is a pavilion built as part of the 6th Biannual Bergen International Wood Festival. Its design was based on the overlap between A-frame timber building techniques, the curvature of boat hulls, and the vernacular snow fences found both in the state of Motntana and the Nordic region of Finse.
After its construction, it became part of the urban garden of architectural follies within the medieval town square of Bergen, there to remain as part of the celebration of Norway's 200th year of constitution.
Montana|Finse was design by Shan Sutherland and Luis Orozco and built with Chris Mertz.
One of the original drivers for the work was to pull revelers into the historic city centre, taking them from the street and depositing them on the promenade that would take them from contemporary Bergen to the docks, old town, and fish markets. The strongest formal driver for the work was a desire to play within the flexible limits of soft, straight grained wood. After much material experimentation and design iteration during our first days on site, we devised a system with articulated formwork built directly into the bent piece, allowing for a reading of the operation of bending from inside the structure. At the end of its service, the timber used, donated by the lumber industry, was dismantled. What was not recycled into other wood products was donated as firewood to local families and elderly care facilities.
