Portable Projector

The brief was to design a portable projector in a design language linked to a shape perception analysis. To do so, design semantics is applied in the ideation process of the shape and also the integration of CMF.

Here, I will be showing the process from developing an archetype to research & ideation, concept development, prototyping, and model making, up to the final result.
Starting with an archetype, the look & feel I am trying to convey is a sophisticated, neutral, and clean look.
After knowing the style that I want to perceive, I continued by sketching different ideas.
I did a quick prototyping with digital sketching to visualize my sketches physically so I could see how big it is, how much space is available for the features, how distinctive it is and which design would fit my persona as well as the demands listed. Here, I converged by choosing 6 ideas. 5 of them are just as it is (upper row) and another 5 is based out of creating another 4 ideas from 1 idea (lower row)
I came down to 3  final choices and from here, I forsee what I could do more with the design. Also reflecting back to the persona, I finally chose design number 2 from these 3. This design fits more to the soft-hard perception I want to achieve while the other 2 are softer with minimum hard details.

Another reason is that I find more potential to integrate the features I want to make, with the given space. This design is also more feasible to model compared to the other 2 which has extreme blends.
The next stage involves iteration and looking at possible options to develop the final design of my choice. Some improvements such as the interface and the angle adjuster are a result of feedback application from class session. Other trials on surfacing, lens, and colours were done independently.
The previous iteration process allowed me to come down to this final CMF board that will guide the model making process of the final product.
The following images are processes that were involved in the model making stage of the final product. It includes shape development on foam, 3D modelling on Siemens NX, 3D printing the parts, assembly, lacquering, final colouring, and addition of details.
An isometric sketch, technical drawing, and product architecture lay out was also made :
The final 1:1 model is presented in these plain mode, environment mode, and mock-up photographs.
